Norfolk Lions Youth Soccer Referees
Norfolk Lions Youth Soccer uses student and adult referees in their program. Those who would like to be a referee must be at least 14 years old at the start of the season and have a Grade 8 referee certification. (This is a change in policy as of June 2014. Referees who are younger than 14 and have been certified Grade 9 prior to the rule change may continue to referee if they continue with their certification.) Preference is given to those who participate, or have participated in Norfolk Lions Youth Soccer.
For more information, please contact the Norfolk Lions Youth Soccer Referee Manager at [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in refereeing for Norfolk Lions Youth Soccer! We look forward to working with all of you.
Assigned referees: please make sure you are familiar with the NLYS Rules of the Game. To be prepared for this season, you should have a printout of the following, which you can get by clicking the links on the left side of this website:
1. NLYS Rules of the Game
2. Field Maps of Pond Street and Freeman-Kennedy (U-17)
In addition, all referees should review their Laws of the Game booklet that was given out at the Grade 8/9 certification course. Assistant referees please look carefully at laws 6, 9, 11, and 15.
Necessary equipment: Assigned referees should have a referee shirt, a whistle to blow LOUDLY, and a stopwatch. (Flags for Assistant Referees will be distributed by the Head Referee on the field. You can also bring your own if you have them.) Please contact the Referee Manager if you do not have the necessary equipment.
Helpful websites and documents for referees are included at the bottom of this page. You will need Adobe Acrobat Viewer to view several of these files.
